Are My Car’s Rotors Going Bad?

If your brakes don’t work, you’re going to have trouble on the roads! One part of your brakes that often get forgotten are the brake rotors. Also known as brake discs, they work with your brake pads to slow the vehicle down and eventually stop it.

How might you know your brake rotors are “going bad?” There are several signs…

Strang Noises While Braking

If you hear a noise when you apply the brakes, and it sounds like a squealing, that probably means the brake pads have worn down. Now if that squealing is accompanied by a grinding noise, which sounds like metal is hitting metal, then you should be concerned about the state of your brake rotors.

Vibrations from the Steering Wheels or Brake Pedals

How about feeling a vibration or pulsation in the steering wheel or brake pedal… or the vehicle itself when you apply the brakes? What does that indicate? Most likely, your brake rotors have worn unevenly or warped so they’re not allowing for a smooth slowing down. Also, if you notice it takes longer than usual for your vehicle to come to a complete stop, you might have an issue with the brake rotors.

Uneven Brake Pads

A mechanic or someone who understands vehicles and their various parts can take a look at your vehicle’s brake pads. If they have uneven wear where one side is wearing down more quickly than the other, the rotors might need replacing. Furthermore, a professional can examine this general area of the vehicle and look for rust on the rotors and/or physical damage(s).

Bad brake rotors mean the vehicle won’t brake as intended. This can lead to accidents.  If and when you think your vehicle needs to have its brake rotors replaced, consider getting used ones for an affordable price at All American Auto Salvage. Why pay more money for brand new when quality used rotors will do the job well?
